Aikido is an exceptionally powerful and effective Japanese martial art, with its roots in jujitsu and Japanese sword arts. Its movements are natural and simple, focusing on timing and positioning, rather than physical strength and size. It is therefore practiced by young and old, male and female alike.

Aikido is unique because rather than fostering a spirit of aggression and competition, Aikido asks us to enter and find a harmonious way through conflict, not only in our practice, but in our every day life. Thus, it transforms the stress of our business, academic, and family lives into opportunities for personal growth and development.

The Santa Barbara Dojo of Aikido Kenkyukai International was founded in 1999 by Lia Suzuki Sensei, 5th dan. Suzuki Sensei has been training aikido since 1982, and moved to Kamakura, Japan in 1987, to pursue her studies with her present teacher, Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan, 7th dan. In addition to standard Aikido classes, Suzuki Sensei's dojo in collaboration with Penn Foundation for Behavioral Health, began pioneering work, using Aikido as therapy for people with substance abuse and emotional health problems. The dojo also has worked closely with the office of adolescent probation and parole, in offering alternatives to troubled youth.
